Sport is not their identity

No matter how talented a child is - sport is something they DO - it's not who they are. It is important that parents / carers, coaches, teachers - do not refer to a child as "the footballer" or "the swimmer" or "the batter" - it's too dangerous! If the child can no longer do that thing or play the sport - it can be harmful to their sense of identity and mental health. In this video I'll outline...

    I’ve been coaching well over 40 years. This past year I was asked a favor to coach high school baseball, I hesitated but decided to help the kids. Well I experienced the same exact scenario as this gentleman mentioned with the new hired varsity coach, it was so toxic that he was finally reported. Sadly the AD was the choke point not allowing this problem escalate to the Unified School District only to learn that the AD & Head Varsity coach are close friends. Parents had no choice to now reach out to the Superintendents. Well unfortunately he called my only to let me know I was dismissed / terminated because of all of the Chaos that he endured as the season with the Varsity team. What’s crazy I was the head coach for the JV Team and he put all blame to me when I had zero responsibilities for the Varsity program only JV’s for which took the JV’s into quite a shock knowingly we had an outstanding experience & coaching. The boys ask what can we do? My response: Do what your hearts speak ! So they all went to the AD, once again, he listened and it stopped Again “ Chokepoint “ not protecting the student athletes Anyway surprisingly the Superintendent had called me, I said hello to them, said thank for the opportunity but unfortunately I was dismissed Superintendent got very quite Few seconds later after he composed himself, he apologized to me and boldly told me he has no authority nor had any authorization to dismiss you! Only we can, nevertheless had zero grounds for any repercussions for any disciplinary actions on you. You’re an employee for us and will continue too. Again he apologized and said he’s gonna clean this mess up and ask me to email him my statement/ claim. In conclusion to all student athletes! Never have any fear on any coach! Your parents will always protect you. If need be, if the immediate administration does not help go directly to the school district and file a formal complaint!! Don’t be afraid of anyone. 🙏🙏🙏 Especially coaches who are bullies.

    Totally disagree. LTAD is a concept developed by Sports Science. It has plenty of potential if properly applied. It’s easy to say if you are not engaged to its principles.

    • @wgcoaching
      @wgcoaching 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comment. I've been around LTAD for about 25 years. In principle it should work well - but in many parts of the world and in many sports it's being delivered not as a logical, systematic model for athletic development but as a one size fits all guaranteed to succeed system designed to take all participants from junior level sport to elite level success. It's not so much the model - it's the way it's being implemented around the world. See more of my thoughts here newsportfuture.com/sport-pathway/

    I am a national level table tennis player(women's category) but the thing is I'm not even 15 yet... I used to love the sport until the last year when I finally got my first gold in nationals. From then on my life has been hell. My coach puts so much pressure on me. Everything I do is wrong. Humiliates me in front of other student's parents, talks shit about my family all the time. Recently after my final exams, my family forced me to go to a family function because of how many I've missed and due to that I missed 3 days of coaching and my coach made me feel like shit because of that

    • @wgcoaching
      @wgcoaching 2 місяці тому

      Thanbkjs for your comment. The only advice I've got is to do what you love - for the reasons you love it. Stay closely connected to the reasons why you play table tennis - and remember we "play" sport - it's something to be enjoyed. No matter what anyone else says or thinks - your sports experience is just that - yours. Keep focused on doing it in a way that makes you happy and everyone else can do and say whatever they like. Make it all about your enjoyment of the sport you love.

      Thanks for your comment. Sorry about that. Sport is getting way way too expensive all around the world. All I can suggest is to find ways to play informally and outside of the competitive sports / club system. Just play anywhere, anytime and with the people you care about. That's what it's all about.

    This fits all to my running coach. That coach would have it out for me, humiliate me in front of the whole group, make me question my own perception of things, negate everything I said, portray me as a failure, would not check in unless I reached out first, would have no patience, would give no advice about recovery, fueling and cross training unless you asked very specifiy (how a new runner’s supposed to know what to ask in the first place is beyond me), and would ultimately leave me discouraged and so sad. Especially after one tempo session, the others in the group were so shocked that they would come and comfort me afterwards. I remember one very teary train ride back home and contemplating to stop running. I’m glad I didn’t. Paid a lot of money for this lesson though.

    • @wgcoaching

      Thanks for your comment. Makes me sad to read stuff like this. I call it "old coaching" because for too long we've placed too much emphasis on physical training and not enough on the person we're coaching. Our job as coaches is to lift people, to show them how amazing they can be and to believe in them. Sorry you've had some bad experiences - but don't give up on what you love doing.

    I spent years thinking I was using the LTAD correctly but I just didn’t grasp what the power behind it really was. I think as an idea to develop children in a more natural way - play then games then sport (kind of) is the way we all used to train as kids. And then not forcing the pressure too early. I love it as a way to get coaches to understand the importance of a participation pathway which gives you more athletes to drive to the top

    Below is the transcription of this video ========== BUSINESS BLAST with Wayne Goldsmith COACHING Coaching Effectively One of most commonly asked questions I get is "What is an effective coach?" I put it down to what I call the 3 L's, Look, Listen, and Love. Look, Listen, and Love. An effective coach will look at what's motivating the individual learner or the employee. They really look and try to understand what it is they're trying to achieve. Secondly, effective coaching is about listening. It's not about telling and yelling. It's not about imposing a particular philosophy on a learner. It's about really listening to them and trying to discover what it is that they're looking for from the coaching experience. And thirdly, it's about love. Now I know that sounds a little corny. But we know that the best coaches love two things. They love the learners. They really love seeing a learner get better at what they do, seeing them improve, seeing them achieve their goals. That means so much to a coach. And secondly, coaches love coaching. They love the experience of changing lives and making a difference in the way people think about themselves, in what they do, how they act, and how they can achieve. Coaches love coaching. That's why it's such a wonderful profession. Want to get better at getting better? Subscribe to my UA-cam channel now, and let's begin a learning journey together!

      아래는 이 동영상 음성 설명을 한글로 번역한 겁니다. ========== 웨인 골드스미스와 함께 하는 폭발적 사업 성장 지도 - 효율적으로 지도하기 제가 가장 많이 받는 질문 중 하나는 "어떤 코치가 효율적입니까?"입니다. 저는 그 답을 관찰(Look), 경청(Listen), 사랑(Love), 이 세 가지로 요약합니다. 관찰(Look), 경청(Listen), 사랑(Love). 효율적인 코치는 개별 학생과 직원이 무엇에 흥미를 느끼는지 습관적으로 관찰합니다. 진짜로, 그들이 달성하려 노력하는 것이 무엇인지 관찰하여 이해하려고 노력합니다.. 두 번째로, 효과적으로 지도하려면 경청해야 합니다. 중요한 것은, 지시하고 소리 지르는 게 아닙니다. 학생에게 특정 방식을 강요하는 게 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 지도/학습 과정에서 그들이 원하는 것이 무엇인지 진짜로 경청하면서 찾아내려고 노력하는 것입니다. 세 번째로, 사랑이 중요합니다. 조금은 진부하게 들린다는 걸 저도 압니다. 하지만 우리는 최고의 코치들이 두 가지를 사랑한다는 걸 압니다. 코치들은 학생들을 사랑합니다. 코치들은 학생들이 자신이 하는 걸 더 잘하게 되는 걸 보는 걸, 발전하는 걸 보는 걸, 자신의 목표를 달성하는 걸 보는 걸 정말 좋아합니다. 그것은 코치에게 정말 큰 의미를 가집니다. 두 번째로, 코치는 지도하기를 좋아합니다. 코치들은 사람들이 자신에 대하여 생각하는 방식, 하는 일, 행동하는 방식, 그리고 목표 달성 방법에 영향을 미쳐 삶을 변화시키는 경험을 좋아합니다. 코치들은 지도하는 일을 좋아합니다. 이것이 코치라는 직업이 그렇게나 멋진 이유입니다. 더 나아지게 하는 일을 더 잘하고 싶나요? 제 유튜브 채널을 지금 구독하시고, 배움의 여정을 함께 시작합시다!

    We find there are many “talented athletes”. The question is what Wayne is discussing. Are they driven to do what it takes to become great athletes. There is a gap between being talented and becoming a great athlete. You need not only to train your body, but to develop your mind, technique, strength & flexibility, energy systems including endurance, speed and explosivity, in addition to honing your fuel intake. Finally how you synergize them to bring it all together to enable your ability to perform your particular sport and position within it.

      Agree. I tell coaches to start with the heart - then the head - then the rest is easy. Connect with the heart. Engage the mind. Then let's start thinking about sets and repeats and intensity levels etc. As an old coaching friend says, "Put heart, before heart-rate". Thanks.

  • @a1-clareprogenyproductions850

    04:00 The NFL sees an outlandish talent in the realm of a Bo Jackson every 4 years from a population of 330million…If Australia has the same success rate they would see an equivalent of this talent every 50 years from a population of 26 million. I would put Jonah Lomu in that category. The George Gregans are far more common than your 4 in 25 years…it’s just your talent pool is small with 26 million.

    Below is the transcription of this video. ========== Series 1 - Coaching How coaches learn It's funny, you know. Over the years we've trained coaches by doing workshops, by doing courses, and running conferences. But when you think about it, coaches really don't learn that way. There's three ways that coaches learn. One is, they learn by coaching. They get out there and work with athletes. They observe, they listen, they look. And they learn as they're actually coaching. They're learning on the job. And they're growing and learning with their athletes. Secondly, we know that coaches learn, by working with, observing, being part of another coaching group. They learn by working with, listening to, watching and coaching with other coaches. Thirdly, we know our very important way the coaches learn and a lot of this has come about, because of having so much information in the palm of the hand through their smartphones and their tablets, is that they learn by solving problems and finding solutions to problems that arise while they're actually coaching. One of the greatest tools any coach can have is an iPad or a smartphone which can help them come up with ideas, solve problems, while they're actually coaching. Coaches learn by coaching.

====== 페이스북에서 우리와 함께하십시오 facebook.com/TheCoachingBrain ====== 트위터에 올리는 최신 소식 twitter.com/CoachingBrain ======

====== 페이스북에서 우리와 함께하십시오 facebook.com/TheCoachingBrain ====== 트위터에 올리는 최신 소식 twitter.com/CoachingBrain ======

    Sorry i can't agree with this, the evidence is in the rise in countries success that uses the LTAD model UK, Canada, Ireland relative to what they were pre LTAD. By comparison Australia's success has diminished. There is a place for it in growing participation rates amongst school students which is on the decline. Instead of looking at LTAD as an approach to individual sports, we should look at it as an approach to increasing transferrable skills. Further it should be used as measure against ourselves instead of against a class of athletes, this way motivation can be increased. I love all of Wayne's thoughts, research and experience in sport and am readily willing to explore all of his publications. It's a good point to start a conversation from though.

    really like your viewpoint on this, but its a shame the swimmer in the green cap wasn't demonstrating catch up as her propulsion arm moved before catch up and head returning to water, plus she crossed and entered thumb first, the two latter much easier to put right before the tricky timing thing, but keep it up

    Hey Wayne couldn’t agree more. Have read a tonne on the 10000 hr concept. What’s lacking is how do you measure an individuals physical strengths, weaknesses, their desire, competitiveness and a raft of other factors and come to 1 number? Doesn’t add up. Keep up the great work
